OCER 5880 - Moving Image in Contemporary Art

Through lectures and discussions on the moving image in contemporary art, the course will encourage students to realize a project of their own. The semester will be divided into three sections, each one consisting of four weeks each. In the first four weeks, we will watch and discuss video works both by myself and other artists within the context of the development of the video form in contemporary art. Among other topics, we will also concentrate on the process of production to encourage students to come up with their own ideas for a project which we will develop in the next stage. The students will develop their ideas within the open studio atmosphere of the class, by discussing the pragmatic and the theoretical aspects of their projects. The last four weeks will be devoted to the production; the shooting and editing of the projects. Students who would like to work with found or archival footage can go directly to the editing phase. Within each phase, I will invite fellow artists and curators to add to the process by sharing with us their experiences in the field.

The workload for each student might vary according to the project they would like to realize in the workshop. Weekly readings and development of the projects should take about 2 to 4 hours per week.
Students should have an active interest in the moving image; primarily in cinema. Some students who have a little experience with a video camera and/or an editing software such as Final Cut Pro or Da Vinci, although not required, would add value to the learning atmosphere in the class.
Autumn 2025-2026
The course will be “pass” or “fail”, based on class attendance and participation and timely delivery of the exercises.
The workshop will function with participation from the students, within a framework of free exchanges of ideas and suggestions as each student develops their ideas. Students who would like to co-produce their projects, each bringing different know-how and value to the project will also be welcome.
