KDDC 2EN06 - Disruptive technologies

This course introduces students to the rapidly evolving world of disruptive technologies—such as artificial intelligence, blockchain, and biotechnology—and their (potential) impacts on society, business, and governance. Students will acquire foresight and scenario-building methods, strengthen their critical analysis and strategic thinking skills, and learn to anticipate and navigate the complex landscape of emerging technologies. Through case studies, group projects, and debates, the course examines societal challenges, ethical dilemmas, and policy issues, with a focus on responsible innovation and the role of stakeholders in shaping technological futures. Course objectives: 1. Understand the concept of disruptive technologies and their (potential) impacts on society. 2. Gain familiarity with foresight, forecasting, and strategic thinking methods. 3. Develop an awareness of societal challenges and ethical considerations related to disruptive technologies. 4. Cultivate a nuanced perspective on responsible innovation and the role of stakeholders in shaping technology futures. 5. Experience and hone soft skills such as being comfortable with the uncomfortable.

No specific technical prerequisites. Intellectual curiosity and an interest in emerging technologies are recommended. Students should bring a laptop or tablet for in-class activities
Autumn 2025-2026
Assessment is based on class participation (30%) and a group project (70%) involving a technology foresight scenario, analysis of societal challenges, and strategic recommendations.
The course combines lectures, interactive discussions, case studies, and group work. Students are encouraged to contribute their perspectives and participate actively in debates on the implications of disruptive technologies. Foresight and critical thinking exercises are integrated throughout.
