BART 93A06 - Comics workshop: Reconstruction of Memory
This course explores Arab comics with a focus on the Lebanese scene, highlighting the autofictional genre. Autofiction offers a wide creative range, allowing artists to address sub-genres such as political advocacy, identity, intimacy, and psychology.
Samir Sayegh's perspective on art, particularly his view that art neither structures nor merely describes the world but instead assists it, aligns with the course's approach to memory reconstruction. His reflections on calligraphy resonate with the idea that art is not just a medium for storytelling but a means of actively engaging with and reshaping our understanding of the past.
Each participant will create a 2–3 page comic based on the theme “Land and Prickles,” implying the roots and belonging intersecting with challenges and pain. This project encourages students to explore personal experiences, refine their storytelling perspective, and select the tone of their narrative. Over the semester, they will learn the foundational skills of comic creation, including scripting, storyboarding, penciling, and inking.
