BHUM 17A35 - Introduction to Postcolonial Theory: A Critical Reading
This comprehensive course takes the critical field of “Postcolonial Studies” as its object. It aims to introduce you to its key concepts, methods, theories, thematic concerns, and, most importantly, contemporary debates of the field. Drawing on a wide range of disciplines such as history, sociology, anthropology, and philosophy, the course critically engages with various topics such as anticolonial nationalism, national identity, orientalism, migration, and globalization, among others. Finally, the course examines the sociological and ideological conditions surrounding the emergence of postcolonial literary studies as an institutionalized field of academic specialization in the late 1970s and early 1980s.
