CSPO 23A07 - Türkiye's sociopolitical dynamics and regional policies

contemporary Türkiye. We will firstly adopt a historical perspective by examining the processes and ideas that shaped the country (the dismantling of the Ottoman Empire, the War of Independence, republicanism, Kemalism) and its democratic institutions. Focusing on key internal challenges and political movements, including the Gezi Park protests of 2013 and their aftermath, we will analyse the tensions between republican institutions and the strengthening of the authoritarian tendencies of the current government. In connection with internal sociopolitical dynamics, we will analyse Türkiye's foreign policy, with an emphasis on neighbouring countries. Through different case studies, the course will cover ongoing geopolitical issues. In a context of relative tension with NATO and rapprochement with Moscow, we will focus on Türkiye's strategic role internationally and particularly in the region shaken by the recent fall of the Baathist regime in Syria and the Palestinian question. The aim of this course is twofold. Firstly, to familiarize students with the internal dynamics of contemporary Türkiye and secondly, to enable them to acquire the analytical skills to critically examine competing ideologies and perspectives as well as global dynamics at stake in the region.
