DDRO 22A09 - Gender, Conflict, and Sexual Violence: Legal and Practical Approach
This course aims to analyze gender-based and sexual violence in the context of armed conflicts. It will begin by defining fundamental concepts and introducing gender theories, exploring their evolution from peacetime to wartime. The course will highlight how such violence, once deemed inevitable, has become a strategic weapon, integrating an intersectional approach. The political and judicial responses of the international community will be examined through the development of international law and United Nations Security Council (UNSC) resolutions. The course will also delve into the specificities of wartime rape, focusing on international negotiations and NGO work, with practical exercises. A case study on the genocide of Yazidis by the Islamic State will provide an opportunity to discuss judicial and political responses. Finally, the course will address contemporary challenges, including the reconsideration of gender concepts in UNSC resolutions and gender biases in public policies, illustrated by the case of women returning from the Islamic State.
