DAFF 25A51 - The Security and Defense Policy of the European Union in a World of Disorder
This policy oriented course will focus on the EU's security and defense politics. With the re-election of Donald Trump, questions on how the EU is going to defend itself are high on the political agendas. How well is the EU prepared to take on more responsibility? To answer the question, the course will look on how the EU addresses security and defence policy issues and identify difficulties in the evolution of the EU's security and defence policy.
In the course students shall learn the functioning of the EU's security and defense policy; understand the concepts of security; familiarize with the different tools of the EU's security and defense policy and getting to know the key issues of deeper EU integration.
In addition, they will train their presentation and writing skills, their ability to understand public documents, research on open source and work in teams.

The assessment of students' performance will be based on
the assessment of a group presentation (30%),
a short oral presentation (20%),
followed by a written policy brief (40%),
and the students' in-class participation (10%).
