OADD 2370 - Environmental Migration

The course takes students through the complexities and various facets of environmental migration. It asks students to delve into the key theoretical, policy and operational characteristics of migration and the environment. It will provide students with an understanding of the key concepts and relevant data around migration, displacement, planned relocation, disasters and climate change. It also provides an overview of policy frameworks, and operational responses to address environmental migration. The course will also present students with multiple institutional and sectoral approaches to address environmental migration.

2. The skills to recognize the diverse data, facts and figures related to environmental migration.
3. An advanced knowledge of policy interventions and operational responses to address environmental migration at global, regional and national levels.

5. Practical and transferable skills for the international job market in the field of migration, displacement, planned relocation, disasters and climate change.

Attendance: 4 hours every 2 weeks / 24 hours a semester
Reading and Preparation for Class: 3 hours every 2 weeks
Research and Preparation for Group Work: 10 hours a semester
Research and Writing for Individual Assessments: 12 hours a semester
Spring 2024-2025
1. 20%, take-home paper, first quarter of the semester: A 2-page brief on the Environmental Migration Profile of a specific country and the recommended action using a template.
2. 30%, take-home paper, third quarter of the semester: A 4-page concept note for a project on environmental migration in a specific region or country using a template.
3. 35%, groupwork, last quarter of the semester: plan and deliver a side event on a facet of environmental migration based on a Guidance Document. 4. 15% participation, all semester.

Feedback will be provided in writing for each written assignment and an overall evaluation of the assignments will be done in the class. For the groupwork, the feedback will be provided orally for the group after the groupwork was delivered and in writing individually.
The pedagogical methodology will be in line with the latest adult learning techniques. The course will employ multiple in-class exercises, interactive presentations and oral debates on the subject matter. The instructor will provide all the needed materials and information for the understanding of the topics treated and on the teaching methods.
Feedback will also be sought regularly from the students on the content of the class, the teaching methods and the coursework.
