K2SP 3260 - Reinventing business to contribute to the development agenda: a practical view

The United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable development sets up 17 Sustainable Development Goals to eradicate poverty, protect the planet and guarantee prosperity for all. The 17 th goal of the SDGs has been added with the purpose of engaging all the actors of civil society including for profit organizations. There is indeed an increased belief that the private sector can bring market-based answers to pressing development issues, in particular when it comes to sustainability, scalability and financial resources. Through this course and varied practical examples, students will be able to assess the motivations that can drive for-profit actors to play a role in Development. They will also study how new forms of partnerships are talking shape between States, International Institutions, actors of civil society such as NGOs and for profit organizations. At the end of the course, students will have a comprehensive and critical understanding of the role private sector can play when it comes to development, particularly through the notions of Corporate Social Responsibility, Inclusive business, Social Business / Entrepreneurship and Impact Finance.
