OAFP 8005 - Migration policies in Europe

This course will analyze the issues European migration policies seek to address, from curbing irregular migration and increasing migrant returns to making asylum systems work, meeting labor market needs, and leveraging migration for development. We will explore the range of actors who shape this agenda, and how policies at EU and Member State level are intertwined. The class will also discuss the effects of European policies on migrants and host communities, as well as countries of origin and transit. By the end of the course, students will be able to: 1) Critically assess the main migration issues in Europe; 2) Analyze how European migration policies are designed and implemented; 3) Assess the effects of European migration policies on migrants, host communities, countries of origin and transit; 4) Deliver briefings on policy issues.
