K2SP 2030 - Political Communication in contemporary democracies

This course examines the changing landscape of political communication by integrating insights from political science, communication studies, and contemporary academic research. It provides a comprehensive mix of theoretical frameworks and practical applications, allowing students to critically evaluate the communication tactics employed by political parties and leaders within an increasingly fragmented media landscape. The curriculum highlights significant trends that are transforming political communication, such as the circumvention of traditional media channels, the emergence of podcasts and social media influencers, and the phenomenon of "TikTokisation" in political messaging. Students will investigate the strategic use of nostalgia, analyse the implications of Donald Trump's electoral strategies, and consider the impact of modern neo-spin doctors, including figures like Elon Musk. The course also addresses topics such as agenda-setting, framing techniques, crisis communication, and the relationship between politics and infotainment. By leveraging recent academic findings, this course provides students with the critical analytical skills necessary to navigate the complexities of contemporary political communication. Through the examination of real-world case studies, participants will develop an understanding of how political figures construct narratives that engage audiences amid the challenges posed by digital innovation and diverse media platforms.
