This course offers an introduction to the law of trade marks and brands. It focuses principally on the law and institutions of the European trade mark regime, with some comparative treatment of US trade mark law. The evolution and functioning of the trade mark regime is discussed against the background of the historical evolution of techniques of marketing, advertising, and branding. Particular attention is paid to recent developments in the field of branding, notably the role of marks in online media and social media.
