BEXP 14A06 - Introducing French and German feminist theory

In gender studies for the last decades, anglophone texts largely dominate the curriculums most of which are highly stimulating for the ongoing debates in feminist and gender studies. Yet this same predominance could risk to marginalize local scientific productions that stem from particular political, social and historical contexts just as passionate. In this class we will read canonical and not so canonical texts from French and German feminist contexts. As the women's liberation movement has been from its beginning a transnational movement, its theoretical and philosophical production have equally provided for a rich body of theories that have traveled and undergone cultural translations of all sorts that we will discuss in this class. The seminar is organized in six blocks of each 4 hours that are all divided into three subsequent sequences: first I will lay out the general topic of the session, then we will have time to discuss the collective literature for the class and thirdly, there will be some time for student's presentations. Students are required to do the reading for each session and prepare two questions for each discussion. Each student has to give a presentation and write a 2 pages reading note on a book from the seminars bibliography.
