CHIS 24A02 - Myths and Realities of the USA

There have always been certain truths about a country that are myths based on true events and those that are exaggerated or even completely misrepresented due to propaganda. This is even more evident in the current climate with fake news and misinformation via the Internet. The goal of this course is to first look at important historical themes and events in the USA and understand and study them in their historical context and then analyze them as they are seen today. The choice of topics varies based on the current political climate and situation but certain themes (American Dream, Manifest Destiny, Immigration, International Affairs, Minorities, Government Institutions) are always treated. Students are asked to prepare some documents in advance so that some of the course can be devoted to debate, discussion and questions on the topics presented. The topics are also seen from both the French perspective as well as the American perspective which adds a dimension of Myth and Reality to the course.
