BART 97A31 - The body as a performative medium: performance in the art world
his workshop delves into the dynamic and immersive world of performance art, focusing on the exploration of different facets of performance, from its historical origins to the diverse contemporary styles seen today. Rather than focusing on theoretical study or written work, this course emphasizes play, experimentation, and practical engagement with performance art as a living, evolving medium.
Students will be introduced to a wide range of performance practices, spanning both contemporary and more mainstream examples such as street theater. The workshop highlights performance art's unique ability to use the human body, whether that of the artist or the audience, as the central tool or medium in creating a powerful artistic work. The body's role as a medium opens limitless possibilities for personal and cultural expression, offering a direct and visceral means of exploring identity.
Through this hands-on workshop, students will:
- Use the Body as a Medium to Create Art- By experimenting with their own bodies and movements, students will discover how physical presence can be a potent means of artistic communication. They will play with gesture, posture, and movement to express ideas, emotions, and cultural narratives.
- Engage with Audience Participation- The workshop will explore how interaction with the audience can bring a new layer of meaning to a performance. Students will experiment with audience participation, discovering how this form of interactivity can blur the lines between performer and observer, creating a shared artistic experience.
- Explore the Evolution of Performance Art- Students will gain an understanding of how performance art has developed over the years, from its radical, avant-garde origins to the present day. This exploration will be done through practical exercises and the re-creation of iconic performance art moments, helping students to understand the medium's history by doing.
- Explore Why Performance Art is a Powerful and Relevant Medium- Through direct engagement, students will reflect on why performance art remains one of the most engaging and impactful forms of artistic expression. It allows artists to embody their ideas, connect directly with an audience, and challenge societal norms in real-time. Performance art can give voice to the artist's true self, offering an unfiltered platform for cultural, social, and political expression.
Throughout the workshop, students will be encouraged to explore their individual identities and cultural traditions, using these as inspiration for their work. The ultimate goal will be to merge these personal and cultural narratives into a final performance piece, telling a collective story of diversity through the lens of performance art.
This workshop is all about play, experimentation, and creative freedom. Students will be invited to push boundaries, explore their own personal and cultural stories, and use their bodies and creativity to bring these narratives to life. There will be no formal study or written assignments—just the experience of learning through doing, creating, and performing.
