This course aims to provide students with an understanding of keys issues and challenges of International Aid as it relates to Global Health, the roles of various stakeholders, their modes of action and their interactions. The course will especially consider the work of non-governmental organisations, as well as health project design and implementation.
Thus, part of the course will be devoted to analysing NGOs' roles and their actions, in emergency and development contexts. Two sessions will also look at how advocacy and research can be developed to generate new ideas and advance knowledge for Global health.
Another part of the course will be devoted to health Project design and Project Cycle Management, leading to a group work on a concrete example (in groups of 3-4 students). The different groups will present their work during the last session of the course, before the individual assessment.
In addition, students will be able to choose topics among the following ones that could be addressed during a specific session or integrated in another session:
• Sexual and reproductive health and rights,
• One health, and more broadly impact of climate change on health
• Pandemic preparedness and response,
• Nutrition and Hunger
• Global Health evolution through HIV/AIDS & Tuberculosis history
The course will be based on practical and field experiences, with several guest lecturers
LEARNING OUTCOMES
1. Describe and analyze the global health landscape and its stakeholder, especially NGOs
2. Identify the main trends and challenges in global health, especially regarding international aid
3. Present an NGO project to a donor using the project development and management cycle tools and standards
4. Analyze how knowledge generation and advocacy can contribute to long term health improvements
5. Analyze the positioning of different actors in a given global health context .
PROFESSIONAL SKILLS
Mastering the content of this course is one of the major keys to perform in the humanitarian, development and diplomatic fields. Thanks to this course, students will develop a deep understanding on International Aids challenges in Global Health, leading to a better critical thinking if they are in a particular global health context in their professional life. They will also start developing capacity in project development. Interactive pedagogy used in the course will develop strong problem-solving skills and innovative thinking. Group works will contribute to teamwork and collaboration skills. This course also gives better understanding of the existing perspectives and opportunity in the global health and international aid landscape and can help students to better define and engage in their professional project.

Students should be interested in health issues, humanitarian & development issues, international aid as well as globalization and climate change. Also, students who would like to dedicate themselves to project management within national/international NGOs or organizations should find an interest in this class. Students may have completed the introductive course in Global Health before this course. But this is not compulsory. If not, a pre-reading of key documents may help the students.
Spring 2024-2025
Assessment will be as followed:
- 50%: group work (presentation of a mock project at the end of the course session)
- 40%: formal distance exam. This exam will consist of an analysis of documents related to course topics
- 10%: participation (throughout the period)
Results & feedback of the group works will be known during the course after of the presentation. Results of the participation and final exam will be provided after the last session by mail.
