BART 97A25 - Gender questions in films

This workshop will introduce students to issues related to gender and how feminist theories help for the analysis of films. These issues are usually framed in reference to women's access to and roles in the production of media and women's representation within these media.Through this course, students will acquire theoretical and methodological tools to study gender in films. They will apply a critical lens to the representations of gender in cinema, focusing on the production, circulation and reception of filmic representations of masculinity, femininity and sexuality. Two main sections will be developped : 1. the historical gendered dimension of film making and women's role as artists 2. the way gender issues (as well as class, race and sexuality) influence filmic representations and vice versa.
