CSPO 23A06 - Protests, revolutions and the strengthening of authoritarianism: social movements in the MENA region
This seminar focuses on political protest in the MENA region. Specifically, the aim is to take a comparative look at the popular uprisings that have taken place since the early 2010s, and to understand the various political causes as well as consequences (such as structural changes,democratic improvements or the strengthening of authoritarianism) at national and regional level, that have resulted from these protest movements.
The aim of this seminar is twofold. Firstly, to familiarize students with the comparative method in political science, and secondly, to enable them to acquire the analytical skills needed to explain and evaluate contemporary political phenomena in the MENA region.
Oral presentation: In groups of two or three, students will present the required reading and a specific political event or issue of their choice related to the session' s theme. At the end of their presentation, students will propose a debate question and lead the class discussion that follows. (45%)
Text analysis: The analysis will draw on concepts and ideas covered in the course and should not exceed three pages when submitted in written form. The aim is for students to demonstrate their ability to carry out a thorough reading and a relevant summary, highlighting the author's thesis, the main arguments and any questions or contradictions that may arise. (45%)
Participation: Weekly assigned reading is mandatory. Regular and active participation in class discussions is required. (10%)
