KGLM 2205 - Governing Urban Sustainability

Cities around the world aspire to become ‘sustainable' by developing a set of wide-ranging policies, plans, and projects in diverse domains (e.g. energy, food, housing, mobility, waste, water) and multiple scales (e.g., neighborhoods, city, region). Yet putting a large metropolis on the path to sustainability entails a hugely complex process of transformation with profound challenges of governance, planning, and design. In this course, we will develop a comprehensive overview of urban sustainability and discuss specific challenges and solutions, including policy frameworks, strategies, and tools. We will also connect urban sustainability to other key domains such as resilience, smartness, and justice. Studying case studies from around the world, we will employ a global urbanism perspective to comparatively and critically address sustainability transitions of large metropolises in both the Global South and North.
