This course will provide students with the necessary methodological tools and skills to conduct data analysis using secondary data for policy-related purposes. Throughout the course, they will be gradually introduced to key topics such as research design, data collection, data analysis, and making inferences. They will learn about various types of qualitative and quantitative techniques and how to use them. Additionally, students will develop skills in utilizing hands-on practical learning to analyze quantitative data in R and gain familiarity with multiple sources of data that are useful for policy analysis.

This is an intermediate level course in Data Analysis. It is expected that students have a basic understanding of social science research methods and have taken at least one undergraduate or graduate course involving statistics and/or data analysis using R.
Students without this background may find the course challenging and are strongly advised to complete the following remedial reading before the course starts:
- Gary King, Robert O. Keohane, Sidney Verba (1994), "Designing Social Inquiry: Scientific Inference in Qualitative Research", Princeton, NJ: Princeton University Press.
However, this course is not advanced and may not be suitable for students with advanced training in statistics and data analysis, such as engineers or economists. Students will also need to bring their laptops to the computer lab sessions, as tablets may not be sufficient for working with R and RStudio.
Autumn 2024-2025
The final grade will rest on three components:
- (20%) In-class written assignment: Based on data analysis and theoretical discussions. organized by the instructor, in the classroom on Session 5 (October 1st)
- (40%) A mid-term written assessment: Based on data analysis and theoretical discussions.
- (40%) A final group project: A group of 3-4 students will work together to analyze a dataset and write a report as a policy assessment. The format will be explained in the first session.
