K7LA 2790 - Introduction to the World of Luxury Watches

The objective of this course is to provide students with an insight into the world of luxury watchmaking, through the history of watches and their symbolism. During this elective, we will learn how to distinguish the different mechanisms, to observe the characteristics of each timepiece, and to understand the latest trends. We will provide an overview of the luxury watchmaking sector to know the main players in the market. Finally, we will discuss the structural changes of recent years and challenges and perspectives of luxury watchmaking. Learning objectives: To know how men set out to conquer time, and to know the historical turning points in the history of watchmaking since 1800. Acquire basic watchmaking terminology allowing a product to be described from an aesthetic and technical point of view. To know how to explain the difference between the types of watch mechanisms and to describe the main complications that exist on the market. Discover the iconic models. Understand the current watch industry by knowing the main Groups that drive it and know how to retrace the changes of recent years. Understand what distinguishes watchmaking from fine watchmaking. Have a good insight of the challenges and perspectives of the sector.
