The business of jewelry and high jewelry is deeply rooted in the history of Paris, which remains the world capital of high jewelry, with the Place Vendôme district as its epicenter. This industry, worth 20bn€ in exports/imports and 5.6bn€ in sales in France (2019), has epitomized for many centuries the Ultimate Luxury.
This world-reknowned industry, with its historical brands and its exceptional craftmanship and precious materials, its products perceived as “power-status” icons or sentimental symbols, is one of the most capitalistic, and profitable, in the luxury business. It is nonetheless facing new challenges, in the fields of distribution (brick and mortar vs. digital, auctions, second-hand sales), creation and production (eg. India becoming a major actor in the gem cutting area), and environmental / corporate social responsibility.
This course aims to provide student whit a general overview of the jewelry / high jewelry history, market and current marketing developments.
