DDRO 27A53 - An Introduction to AI, Data and the Law
The seminar seeks to provide a introductory overview over legal issues in Artificial intelligence (AI) and data. In doing so, the course focuses on the European law, including in the context of the recent US-EU joint initiatives, but it also aims to sketch a bigger picture on different instances of regulation across the planet.
The broader framework informing this course is in fact the understanding of questions around technology as questions of global justice and inequality, to interrogate the role(s) played by the law - its possibilities and limits.
More specifically, the course will examine current regulatory issues (eg. AI risks, discrimination, surveillance, protection of personal data) focusing on power and control over AI (eg. considering its components: personal and non data, algorithms and models, computing power, infrastructures) through the lenses of a political economy of technology, and paying careful attention to how law plays out in the debates on technology development.
The course will consist of interactive seminars. Students prepare on the readings/media prescribed for each seminar in order to engage in the discussion in class. Participation will be taken into account in the assessment, as specified below.
