DDRO 25A88 - Privacy in the Digital Age: European Law Perspectives
In this wave of remarkable technological progress, where technologies change the way we live and generate vast amounts of personal data, privacy regulation has gained significant momentum. Among the patchwork of legal frameworks adopted worldwide, the EU has asserted its regulatory leadership by taking a singular stance. Through the GDPR, the EU has attempted to protect individuals' data rights, with the belief this will increase trust in these technologies and in turn foster digital growth. This class will explore the foundations of EU data protection law, from a critical legal perspective, shed light on the ongoing challenges that shape this field and, most importantly, empower you to become informed digital citizens.
Grading will be based on: (i) a 1,500-word opinion paper on a current topic in privacy due in week 8 (45%) (ii) a mock trial in groups in weeks 11 and 12 (45%) (iii) class participation (10%).
