DAFF 25A31 - Wars and Regional Dynamics in the Horn of Africa
Acquire knowledge of the main issues at the root of most of the conflicts in Africa. Adequately understand the conflicts and geopolitical dynamics that affect the Horn of Africa. Identify the historical, political, and military regional dynamics of these conflicts, as well as their broader international dimension. A critical analysis of Horn Africa's relations with the world as the new battle held between emerging powers such as the Gulf, BRICS and traditional superpowers. Provide a general overview of violent extremist groups and regional and international responses to the Global War on Terror/GWT/. Understand current wars as well as their strategic implications and connections to the most prominent global security challenges of the post-Cold War and post 9/11 world.

No prior knowledge requirement. Just an interest in the African continent and, more generally, in regional security complexes, history, the State and international relations. Applicants whose first language is not English will be required to show proficiency.
Spring 2023-2024
Students will be assesed through essay, oral presentation and class participation. Students must submit an essay proposal and write an essay, respectively, on which they will be assessed. Together, these will account for 50% of the mark. Essay proposal 10%, Essay 40%, Participation and Commitment 10%, Oral Presentation 40%.
