OAFP 6260 - Trade and Environmental Sustainability

The course explores the interface between international trade and environmental sustainability from an interdisciplinary perspective using economic, legal, and social sciences theories. We examine and discuss the role of trade-related measures and bilateral/multilateral trade initiatives in the pursuit of environmental protection. A particular emphasis is put on the evolution of the EU's approach to trade and environmental sustainability, looking at recent legislations such as the EU's Deforestation-free products initiative, Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM), Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence directive (CSDD) and the revised Trade and Sustainable Development Action Plan. The course explores – both theoretically and through case studies - the impact of EU trade-related environmental measures on economic development in the Global South, and the avenues for mitigating the potential perverse effects of such measures while enhancing global and bilateral sustainability partnerships. To stimulate the debate and encourage in-class interactions, sessions include contributions of selected guest speakers from different professional backgrounds and communities (WTO, EU, think tanks, and leading Universities).
