BART 12A18 - Japanese Calligraphy Initiation and Suibokuga (Ink brush painting)

This art workshop aims at discovering the first steps of Japanese calligraphy with material. The course introduces a series of representative characters which will be used to practice Japanese calligraphy techniques in regular kaisho style, sôsho style and also Suibokuga (ink brush painting) with haiku. Students make a masterpiece with a haiku and their original Suibokuga.

To validate the course, the student is expected to pass the following assignments: 1) Create a masterpiece in Kaisho style in the middle of the semester: 25% 2) Create a masterpiece in Sôsho style with Suibokuga in the end of the semester: 25% 3) Presentation and explanation for the masterpiece in the end of semester: 15% 4) Submit tasks given in a class. Each weeks the task should be submitted before the next session. (11 times): 25% 5) Attend, participation, attitude in sessions: 10%
At the end of the course, the student is expected to : 1) Master calligraphic techniques to understand and be able to reproduce from memory some characters' structure and basic strokes in regular style (楷書kaisho) and Heian era style (草書sôsho). 2) Enlarge their physical perception when reading and writing calligraphy. 3) Develop a curiosity for classical haiku and concepts. 4) Express sentiments and ideas in calligraphy of haiku and image as an artistic work.
