DHUM 27A13 - Women and politics through two British 20th and 21st century novels
Mrs Dalloway (1925) by Virginia Woolf has not only paved the way to a radically new conception of literature but also to a specific space given to women. The course will study it along with a novel directly derived from it, The Hours (1998) by Michael Cunningham. Through comparatives studies of extracts and presentations connected to both novels, the students will discuss the narrative techniques and the intricate connection between women and politics. The last four classes will focus on the analysis of movie adaptations, Mrs Dalloway (1997) by Marleen Gorris starring Vanessa Redgrave and Rupert Graves and The Hours (2003) by Stephen Daldry starring Meryl Streep, Nicole Kidman and Julianne Moore.
