BMET 25A14 - Introduction to Qualitative Methods

The objective of this workshop is to introduce students to the most common methods of the social sciences. To this end, basic knowledge and know-how in the field of qualitative methods for collecting original data will be focused on. It will thus focus on two main methods : interview, ethnographic observation. A general presentation of each method will first highlight its origins, its different uses as well as its contributions and limitations. Then, and mostly, this workshop has a resolutely concrete goal. It will thus be an opportunity for students to put these methods into practice, by carrying out an interview and observation. The workshop will address all the elements that can influence the collection of information: places, position of the investigator, context of the investigation situation, etc. Ultimately, this workshop will attempt to provide students with investigative techniques that are easily applicable in any situation of social interaction or activity, which may be useful to them in the rest of their academic studies and professional life as well.

The assessment will concern both the practical application of the methods taught and the ability to develop critical thinking. It will include two exercises: 1) the production and transcription of an interview 2) the production of an observation report. Each of his exercises will contribute equally to the final grade (45% for each exercise). The student's commitment during the semester (ability to be engaged in in-class exchanges, ask questions, etc.) will count for 10% of the final score.
