OAAG 1010 - Unlocking Finance for Agriculture

Developing countries need to dramatically increase agricultural innovation and the use of technology by farmers, to eliminate poverty, meet the rising demand for food, and cope with the adverse effects of climate change. Nearly 80 percent of the world's extreme poor live in rural areas, with most relying on farming for their livelihood. Access to finance can play a pivotal role in helping them move out of poverty. This class captures the way agriculture finance currently operates, including microfinance for small holders farmers and discusses how Governments, the private sector and donors can effectively help farmers and agricultural small and medium enterprises access suitable financial services.

LEARNING OUTCOMES
1. Understanding the role of finance , including microfinance, for agriculture as well as key challenges and opportunities shaping demand and supply of agriculture finance
2. Understanding the challenges of policy-making to support agrifinance and the pros and cons of various instruments
3. Being able to conduct assessment of agri microfinance institution or agricultural SME or business recommendations for a Financial Services Provider.
