OCEU 2135 - UK-EU Relations. Causes and Consequences of Brexit

***UPDATED for 2022/23***

Examine the roots of the UK's decision first to join and then to leave the EU; PM Cameron's renegotiation, the referendum campaign and its aftermath; the UK-EU negotiations under Article 50; the effect of Brexit on the EU27 and further European construction; prospects for the United Kingdom, internally and internationally. Discussion on the consequences of the Brexit referendum for the EU27; Analysis of exit arrangements and institutional procedures; Impact on the external trade regime of the EU and the UK; Future relations between the EU and the UK from 2023 onwards.

- Attendance: 2 hours a week / 24 hours a semester

Spring 2022-2023
- Written essay (2,500 words) addressing one aspect of the subjects discussed in the sessions; the lecturers will offer a list of topics but be open also to proposals from the students - around mid-semester (50%)

- A final essay (c. 2,500 words) on one of several themes proposed by the lecturer or on a theme proposed by the student and approved by the lecturer, drawing on the material explored during the sessions (50%).

This course is taught by two Professors with personal experience of EU and British affairs, who will address the topic from different perspectives, one broadly European and the other broadly British.
