DAFF 25A85 - The European Union Enlargement Policy
This course examines the dynamics of EU enlargement, its impact on the institutions and policies of the European Union and the incentives and disincentives for EU membership. It analyses the pre accession process and the enlargement negotiations from a legal, economic, and political perspectives - why and how the EU is enlarging, as well as the reasons behind applications for membership from non-member states.
The course compares the different rounds of enlargement, and their impact on the institutions and policies of the European Union.
The course introduces students to the scholarly debate on Europeanisation and conditionality, with particular attention to the EU's approach to the membership aspirations of current candidates and the need to adapt the EU's institutional structure.

The course builds on European Political Systems and Institutions. Good knowledge of EU institutions and policies are required.
