The workshop would teach students how to create a roadmap, actionable by most urban policy makers, to avoid, reduce and offset their greenhouse gas emissions. The workshop focuses on case studies of European institutions and firms that launched Carbon strategies in order to give technical quantified inputs about GHG actions.
1. The first workshop presents the tools and methodologies needed to create a practical roadmap and an action plan for urban stakeholders.
2. This second workshop scales down and focuses on strategies at the neighborhood and building level. It teaches how the urban sectors can tackle embodied and operational carbon and also contribute to carbon sinks. It will present the main environmental frameworks and certifications for neighborhoods and buildings.
3. As reducing and avoiding emissions is often not enough for cities, companies and institutions to reach a net zero emission target, this third workshop presents the most common European urban CO2 offsetting strategies.

The workshop would not request any further work outside the 12 hours of course.
Autumn 2022-2023
This workshop is validated 2 ECTS. The evaluation would be a small assessment, during the last session, where the students would use the excel sheet CRREM (European Union method for Carbon Risk Real Estate Monitor) to plan a low carbon development path for an Austrian social housing company, based on provided data. Their final output would be a quantified roadmap to achieve these goals including a timeline with specific actions in tons of CO2 avoided (i.e how many tons of CO2 would one spare by deciding to switch to a full district heating network).
Each 4-hour workshop will include an interactive discussion and feature a 1-hour debate with an expert. The second lesson would include an onsite visit of a low carbon neighborhood development. The third lesson would feature a 1-hour assessment.
