BMET 27A03 - The Future of American Foreign Policy

This course will review traditional American foreign policy making processes and trends, assess how they changed under the transgressive Trump Administration, and consider how the Biden Administration will respond to these transformations. The course seeks to answer several questions. Do American foreign policy interests remain essentially unchanged since the advent of Trump or has that president redefined them? What were the Trump Administration's international objectives and were they significantly different from those of past administrations? In what ways will President Biden be constrained by the choices his predecessor made? What is the future of American leadership in the global system? Coursework will include readings and oral presentations.
