OCMO 2240 - The Great Powers In The Middle-East. A Crisis Management and Policy Formulation Workshop

Great Power competition reverberates across a more multipolar Middle East in the wake of the war in Ukraine and regional states are exploiting these opportunities to advance their interests. The future of the region is uncertain.

Observing the complex interactions between external and regional players, understanding their motivations and calculations, participating in policies recalibration and crisis management, may offer some clues.

Students will play the role of European Union experts dealing with Egypt, Turkey, Syria, Lebanon, Israel, Iraq, Yemen, and Iran. They will conduct the situational assessment of a flash point and will make recommendations: current priority issue, strategic approach, policy options, etc.

The professor will use Afghanistan as a case study to illustrate the methodology (research, analysis, formulation of policy, and briefing).
