BART 97A31 - The body as a performative medium: performance in the art world

This workshop will delve into the world that is performance art, exploring different facets of performance from its origins to the vast range of contempory performance art styles seen today. The course will cover a range of different practices of performance from the contemporary to the more mainstream examples such as street theatre etc. Performance art has always been an extremely engaging form of art in which one can use their proper human body or that of the audience as the main tool or medium in which to create a work. Using the body as a medium to create art opens many doors to be explored and has a great potential to portray a strong image of the artists personality and true self. The workshop will outline a variety of forms of performance art exploring into the realm of the expression of self and the expression of culture using ideas from cultural traditions of each individual student and their idea of the self. With the goal of merging these ideas into a final piece which will be performed and presented together telling a story of diversity in cultural through this vast medium that is performance art. This will be covered through the exploration of : -The body as a medium to create art -Using audience particpation to create an interactivity in art -How performance art was created and developed over the years -Why performance art is a remevent medium to create an artwork
