DAFF 25A45 - Contemporary Perspectives on Conflict and Security
The course explores perspectives on and approaches to conflict and security in the contemporary context. It pays special attention to the theories and concept underpinning the analysis of war, peace, crisis, and the creation of security and insecurity. In addition to focusing on the use of violence by states, we will also pay attention to actors beneath and beyond the state. The course is inter-disciplinary in nature, incorporating readings from politics, philosophy, anthropology, and sociology.
Learning objectives
• Understand contemporary approaches on security and conflict through interdisciplinary research in the social sciences
• Gain an empirical and theoretical knowledge on contemporary conflicts
• Explore methods of war- and peace-making and how they overlap with political power
• Acquire an introductory background to expert debates and policy interventions on conflict, as well as their analytical, practical, and theoretical implications
• Develop critical thinking skills to review academic approaches and literature, and apply these skills in essays and presentations to form original arguments
