K2SP 3100 - Digital Innovation and Solutions in Healthcare Industry

Until recently, Healthcare seemed to be lagging behind many other sectors with regards to broad adoption of digital transformation. This is particularly true with regards to the delivery of care to patients. The COVID crisis strongly accelerated the use of telemedicine and the acceptance by citizens, healthcare professionals as well as regulators and payers that data & technology are core to bringing rapid innovation and solutions. As a matter of fact, many big tech companies such as the GAFAM (Google, Amazon, Facebook, Apple and Microsoft) have been investing for many years in healthcare while not being traditional healthcare players. This course is aiming at sharing the trends behind the mega-transformations in healthcare systems (emergence of Value Based Framework, growing role of the patients and generally speaking of the citizens, data availability and technology breaktrough innovations,..) as well as understanding both the enablers and the obstacles behind these transformations. Multiple case studies will be leveraged to identify critical success factors favoring a needed and useful evolution in policy framework, business models, enabling technologies as well as in organization and stakeholders sociology. This will be of particular help for students considering joining either the public or the private sector and interested in contributing to broad adoption of innovations which matters to patients and leverage data and technology.

Each session generally starts with a commentary from one student regarding a relevant brief article: therefore it is expected that each student reads the article and once during the semester prepares and present a 10 mn verbal commentary supported by a brief (less than 10 slides) Powerpoint presentation.
Students should be familiar with Healthcare Systems components and interested in further understanding on how to leverage technology to improve patients outcomes and efficiency of healthcare systems. To fully benefit from this course, it is strongly suggested to read “Managing Innovation in Healthcare, James Barlow, World Scientific, ISBN 978-1-78634-152-5”
