AHUM 12A00 - Along the silk Road

The purpose of this yearly class is to study the building and flourishing of the Silk Road(s) from Antiquity origins to the XXI century revival. All aspects will be addressed in a pluridisciplinary approach along with reading seminars. Students will be required to work on primary sources and on academic references. Reading references and class bibliographical requirements will be provided before each class, especially online resources. The class PowerPoint will be in the class folder a week in advance along with the readings. Resources will also be available after the lecture to read further.

Autumn 2021-2022
• A resource paper is due on April 15th 2022. It will be supervised and graded by the seminar professors but the grade will be included in the Lecture classes assessment. A specific schedule and advices will be provided at the beginning of the autumn semester for this research work, including methodology advices, the different steps, requirements and deadlines. • Graded exercises as part of the reading conference classes assessment. Grading criteria will be provided in each seminar class. (3ECTS) • Two exam will take place on the Lectures Syllabus in December and in May, the resource paper grade will be included in the assessment : 60% for the resource paper and 40% for the two exams. (3 ECTS)
Twelve lectures, each one dealing with a specific geographical area and historical period. We will follow the Silk Road branches using archeology, epigraphy, architecture, literary, religious or scientific texts and iconography as as many tools to try and capture the spirit as well as the daily activities of travelers. Not to mention economy as well as the study of divination, history of religions, paying attention also to rites, stories, food, magic and medicine, and entertainment forms.
