ODEC 8075 - Global Competition Law: Advanced Seminar

This course introduces global competition law and economics. It mainly focuses on the globalization of this field of law. We will cover essential topics, such as monopoly vs. competitive markets, goals of competition law, its spread in the Global South, as well as newer issues that have come to the field in recent years, including two-sided markets, Brandeisian competition policy, cross-shareholding and the impact of COVID-19.

Introduction to Competition Law – in French or English

Participation on a Panel: Students are asked to read the assignments prior to class and to participate in class discussions, particularly when they are assigned to be on a panel (40%). Final Research Paper: of an assigned topic (60%).
• Develop basic understanding of concepts such as competition, monopoly, cartels, abuse of dominance and illegal agreements and welfare in both the EU and US jurisdictions with the help of economics, law and policy. • Introduce the differences and similarities between the competition laws, enforcement systems, policy goals and administration of competition regulation • Highlight how these laws can be utilized for alternative goals, such as growth and development • Conceptualize the globalization and internationalization of competition laws.
