First-year Core Economics is a general introduction to contemporary economic issues and the economic methods used to address them. Inspired by the CORE project, an open access course based on an interactive e-book, the course offers a new, integrated approach to microeconomics and macroeconomics that draws on the advances in economics to better understand the challenges of our time.
The course focuses on: economic actors (who are driven by both their personal interest and social preferences); the role of social interactions and contracts; major contemporary economic issues (unemployment, inequalities, financial crisis, growth, etc.); the role of economic policies in responding to these economic challenges and institutional differences between economies, and their impact on differences in economic performance and well-being.
The final exam accounts for 1/3 of the final grade.
A continuous assessment accounts for the remaining 2/3. The continuous assessment is computed as follows: 1/3 of the grade for the midterm exam (mid-semester exam common to all students) and the remaining 2/3 will be decided by the teaching assistant of the tutorial using 3 different evaluations (for instance: grading of the discussions of the problem sets, small quiz and MCQ, debates in class, reading notes). One of the 3 grades may be a tutorial participation grade.
