The course provides an introduction to qualitative methods for urban research. It aims at developing research skills for students interested in urban sociology and urban policy analysis by providing them with the tools for understanding and conducting in-depth research on a variety of issues, ranging from everyday interactions in the metropolis to the multi-level governance of cities. It will offer insights on how to elaborate a research question from the observation of events and situations, and on how to come up with an appropriate research design to answer it. The use of different approaches, from interviewing techniques to ethnographic observation and the analysis of documentary sources, will thus be presented and experimented by the students. Indeed, the workshop and the required assignments will combine readings, collective discussions, and the organization and execution of a small field research on one aspect of the Paris metropolis.
