BAFF 1755A - IAS Core Common - International Organizations

This course aims to equip students with some of the knowledge and skills needed to work in an international organization. International organizations function in virtue of International Law. Hence, in the first part, the course gives an overview of the core notions of International Law needed to understand the functioning of international organizations such as the sources of international law, the making of international treaties or the areas of action of international law. In the second part, the course looks at the concrete functioning of international organizations by discussing seven global and regional organizations (with a focus on Europe and America), such as the Council of Europe, the European Union, the United Nations, the Organization of American States, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization or the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe. In the third part, the course will give a few practical tips for working in international organizations. In the second part of the course, guest lecturers with experience in working for/on international organizations will be invited to share insider knowledge, but also information and tips on how to find an internship or a job in such organizations. Students will receive the bios of the guest speakers in advance and are encouraged to ask questions and actively engage with the invited speakers.
